Rahul D’Lima
It is a social dance form that began in the Jazz bars of New Orleans. Through the years, Tap has evolved as a wonderfully rhythmic dance form that finds appeal across all age groups. This weekend, you can learn the basics of this dance form with choreographer Rahul D’Lima. “Tap dance is a lot of fun and I would like to create awareness about it,” says D’lima, the artistic director at the TR Dance Company.
“I grew up watching musicals. It was a staple diet of Gene Kelly, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire movies, and listening to Jazz music whenever my mom found the time to take me to a movie or for performances. So I always had a taste for music and dance,” he says. He went for a rehearsal with Bollywood choreographer Oscar Unger, saw him perform Tap, and fell in love with the dance form. “It set the ball rolling. He taught me the basics, and I have never lost my love for Tap since.” D’Lima’s other teachers include legends like Jason Samuels Smith (USA), and Nina Ozhegova (Russia); he is currently being mentored by Tap dance sensation Andrew Nemr.
The workshop will be an introduction to Tap dance, says D’Lima. People will be taught basic vocabulary and phrases. It is open to anyone above seven years old.
